How to Maintain Your eBike Battery During Winter Storage

As winter sets in and the trails get icy, many eBike enthusiasts in Ottawa decide to store their eBikes until the warmer months return. Proper storage of your eBike is essential to ensure it’s ready to perform when the snow melts. One critical component that needs special attention during the winter is your eBike’s lithium-ion battery.

Lithium-ion batteries are efficient and durable, but they require care during long periods of inactivity. Neglecting proper maintenance can lead to reduced performance or even permanent damage. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best practices for maintaining your Teslica eBike battery during winter storage.

1. Store Your Battery Between 50% and 70% Charge

One of the most important tips for lithium-ion batteries is to store them at an optimal charge level—between 50% and 70%. This range prevents the battery from becoming over-discharged (which can damage it) or overcharged (which stresses the cells).

  • Why 50%-70%?

Storing your battery fully charged or completely drained can lead to chemical imbalances within the cells, shortening its lifespan. The 50%-70% range keeps the cells stable during extended storage.

  • Pro Tip: Check the battery charge indicator before storing your eBike, and if needed, plug it in for a partial charge to reach this level.

2. Charge the Battery Once a Month for 15 Minutes

Even when not in use, lithium-ion batteries can lose charge over time due to a phenomenon called self-discharge. To counteract this:

  • Plug in the battery for about 15 minutes once a month to maintain its optimal charge level.
  • This practice prevents the battery from dropping below 50%, which can lead to deep discharge and potential damage to the cells.

Note: Avoid leaving the battery connected to the charger for extended periods, as overcharging can also degrade its performance over time.

3. Keep the battery in a cool, dry place.

Temperature plays a significant role in battery health. Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to extreme conditions:

  • Ideal storage temperature: Between 10°C and 20°C (50°F to 68°F).
  • Avoid freezing temperatures, which might permanently damage the battery cells. Similarly, avoid storing the battery near heat sources, which can accelerate degradation.

Pro Tip: If your garage or shed gets too cold, consider bringing the battery indoors while leaving the eBike itself in storage.

4. Avoid Moisture and Humidity

Moisture can corrode the battery terminals and internal components, leading to reduced performance or failure. Always store your battery in a dry place, and make sure it is clean and dry before storing.

  • Use a protective case or battery sleeve for added protection against dust and humidity.

5. Inspect the Battery Before and After Storage

  • Before storing your battery, check for any signs of damage, such as cracks, swelling, or corrosion. Address any issues immediately.

After winter, inspect the battery again before reinstalling it on your eBike. Look for changes in its appearance or performance.

6. Disconnect the Battery from the eBike

It's advisable to fully detach the battery if you plan to store your eBike for a long time.  This reduces the risk of accidental discharge or drain caused by onboard electronics.

7. Avoid Complete Discharge

Never allow your battery to discharge completely, as this can cause irreversible damage to the lithium-ion cells. Regularly checking and maintaining its charge level ensures longevity.

Why Proper Winter Maintenance Matters

Taking these simple steps to care for your Teslica eBike battery over the winter can significantly extend its lifespan and ensure optimal performance when it’s time to ride again. A well-maintained battery means more miles, better efficiency, and fewer unexpected issues.
