Updated: Getting Your EBike Ready For Winter
At Teslica, one of the most common questions we are asked around this time each year is whether or not you can ride your e-bike during the winter.
The answer for the most part is yes but you should take into consideration some winter preparation and maintenance.
The following tips are compiled by our team here at Teslica.
Top 5 E-Bike Winter Maintenance Tips
1. Invest in Winter E-bike Tires
If you plan to use your e-bike during the winter, we highly recommend you invest in winter tires. Keep in mind the type of riding you do which will help you determine the tread and width along with the recommended tire pressure. If you’re not sure what kind of tires you need, give us a call, we’d be happy to answer any questions you might have.
With proper winter tires, your e-bike will be able to perform better including improved traction and protection against punctures caused by debris and sharp objects (inculding ice)which the snow and slush can mask
2. Protect with Rust Proof Spray
With all of the snow, slush, and salt, you’ll want to be vigilante when it comes to protecting your ebike body and components against rust.
Applying a rust proof spray should be done annually. Be sure to spray the nooks and crevices of your e-bike after each ride and wipe down your e-bike to keep it clean and dry at all times.
Note: Depending on how often you’ll be using your e-bike, it’s important to educate yourself and make smart choices for cold weather riding.
3. Safeguard Your Battery
We get asked a lot what we recommend doing in regards to storing the e-bike battery. Your battery is just as important to your e-bike as the engine is to your car. It’s best to store and charge your battery inside in the winter and/or when it’s not in use.
Your battery should be brought up to room temperature slowly before charging. Some winter riders will add an insulating material around the battery for very cold days to help with overall range. If you use your e-bike to commute each day, consider bringing your charger with you to top up at work and avoid having to pedal part of the way home unassisted.
4. Adjust Your Seat
Certain sections of the roads can be slippery especially when riding around corners.
Consider lowering your seat to keep your feet closer to the ground and to help you maneuver your e-bike better. This will give you way more control in harsher road conditions.
If you’ve stored your e-bike for the winter, it’s a good idea to bring it in for a tune up before you get back on the road again. At Teslica, our staff are happy to help with all things related to your e-bike.
If you need a diagnostic, repair, or maintenance, our qualified mechanics will have you back on the road again in no time.
